Prakruti or the basic body constitution/ type of a human being is determined at the time of conception and remains unchanged throughout lifetime. Prakruti is the physical and psychological constitution of the individual determined on the basis of three doshas. Thus the constitutions are determined as Vata body type/ constitution, Pitta body type/ constitution and Kapha body type/ constitution and their combinations depending upon the dominancy. According to Ayurveda, every individual is unique with different combinations of vata, pitta and kapha. This subtle difference brings about different reaction by individuals exposed to the same environment or stimuli. Thus it is very important for each one of us to know our prakruti or body type so as to prevent diseases & understand oneself better physically and psychologically resulting in better adjustability and management of any situation in the given environment (it may be home/ office/ organization/ etc). For an Ayurveda Clinician, assessment of prakruti plays a pivotal role in treating patients effectively and precisely. Many factors as sukra-shonita prakruti (condition of sperm-ovum), condition of the uterus and the food regimen adopted by mother during pregnancy determine the prakruti of an individual. According to Ayurveda there are seven body types, such as Mono types (vata, pitta or kapha predominant), Dual types (vata-pitta, pitta-kapha or kapha-vata) and equal types (vata, pitta and kapha in equal proportions).
